MASTERCLASS

First Violin

The first violin section is the soprano of the string instrument groups – high positioned melodies and attractive passages, delicate virtuosity, stylistic diversity, long and singing phrases, very often supporting solo wind instruments or singers.

Some typical excerpts used for first violin auditions are Brahms 4 (Scherzo), Schumann 2 (Scherzo), Bruckner 9 (Scherzo).

I have recorded these and some other popular orchestral excerpts for first violin auditions, which you can access in the additional resources below. Certainly there are many different good ways of interpretation, and this is only one of the possible successful ways. I am also supplying sheet music for these excerpts with my own annotations added.

We will have eight sessions of 90 minutes each in groups of 3 students.

MASTERCLASS

Second Violin

The second violin section is the mezzo of the string instrument groups. The important factors here are perfect rhythm, agogic transitions, a kind of an inner beat feeling, many colors and registers of sounds and an excellent chamber music facility of being a “team player”.

Some typical excerpts used for second violin auditions are Smetana’s The Bartered Bride (Ouverture), Mozart’s Magic Flute (Ouverture), Bruckner 9 (Adagio), or the Bartok Concerto.

MASTERCLASS

Concertmaster

The concertmaster is the head of the strings section – the important skills are soloistic interpretation, leadership, communication and transmitting of the vibes and waves of a conductor, suggestive energy, and a good intuition in the right moments of the right decisions.

Some of the most required concertmaster soli for the most of the orchestra auditions worldwide are Heldenleben, Bürger als Edelmann, Scheherazade and Swan Lake.
