About Me

For almost 30 years now, I have had the privilege of playing Principal Second Violin with the Vienna Philharmonic.

Why I want to teach you

My name is Tibor Kováč. For the past 28 years, I have had the privilege of playing Principal Second Violin with the Vienna Philharmonic. Every day that I wake up, I look forward to discovering new colors of sounds and new musical adventures. And every day I learn by playing with some of the greatest conductors, singers, and soloists.

In 1992, as a young Slovak soloist, after finishing my studies at the Vienna University of Music, I applied for admission to the Vienna Philharmonic. I won the audition and became a member of my absolute favorite orchestra! Today, I remember the times when I was preparing for my audition – buying CDs and full orchestra scores and studying various audition excerpts. I remember looking for input and knowledge in preparing myself for auditions, and simultaneously trying to contact experienced orchestra musicians, to talk with them about the traditions of styles, and about the required level of preparation for an audition. It was a combination of several challenges and I wished I could just have a coach, specialized in orchestra audition repertoire, so I could ask him for all details. I felt like I was walking on a foggy path…

Now I would like to help young violinists who are preparing for orchestra auditions. I would like to help them illuminate their own way and to help with eternal questions of specific interpretation possibilities, styles, phrasing, sound production, but also give technical advice and explain some more about the backgrounds and content of the pieces required. I used to be member of the jury in such auditions for many years and it was for me one of the most exciting and insightful experiences!

I have conducted multiple masterclasses in Japan, Austria and Italy. Some participants of my masterclasses at the Tokyo College of Music even came to Vienna to have some more private lessons. For many years, besides giving masterclasses, I have also been giving private lessons.

At those most joyful and passionate moments of teaching, when I was able to help my students to improve their violin playing, inspiring them to approach their own personal musical imaginations and aims as well as accompanying them on the way to their individual style and musical personality, I also realized that expressing my thoughts and musical ideas even influenced my violin playing in a special way.

And now, in the 21st Century, we have the great advantage of technical possibilities and highly equipped logistics. I am very happy and proud to launch my first online masterclass and I am very much looking forward to working with violin students and candidates for various auditions!

Every day that I wake up, I look forward to discovering new colors of sounds and new musical adventures. and every day I learn by playing with some of the greatest conductors, singers, and soloists.
